Skelton Sherborne Shipping Index July 2010
24 Aug 2010
Import volumes in July climbed by 14% to 1943 units so the trend line encouragingly is still up.
The Customs FOB value dropped from $276m in June to $256m in July however we forecast this to improve over the next two months as we are currently engaged in shipping more mining equipment into Australia than we have in quite some time.
New finance contracts for Construction and Earthmoving equipment have improved again too.
The Baltic Shipping Index has tracked downwards from 1,732 since our last report to 2,756 as of August 23rd.

Revised policy for road transport permits Qld Aust
16 Aug 2010
Queensland Transport has updated their revision to the Vehicle Limits Manual regarding 'Confirmation of Load' for Single Trip Load Carrying Excess Mass Permit applications effective as of the 13th of August 2010.
Consequently, for all load carrying movements requiring a single trip excess mass permit, certification by the manufacturer, confirming the actual mass of the load to be transported, must be supplied before the application will be processed.
Certification must be specific to the load being carried and identify all componentry being carried as part of the load.
Acceptable forms of manufacturer's certification would include: Letter from manufacturer or manufacturer's agent, Manufacturer’s engineering drawing, Manufacturer’s brochures, specification sheets or other manufacturer’s documentation specifying details of transport and component masses.
Unacceptable forms of certification would include: Documentation from a transport agency, shipping company or freight forwarder, Non manufacturer and non engineering drawings, Generic documentation from non manufacturer sources, such as industry publications or Wikipedia.

Representations are being made by Industry to Queensland Transport to come up with a more workable process as all are aware that manufacturers certifications are not possible for 2nd Hand Equipment from both domestic and international markets.

Export at AAT Wharfs
09 Aug 2010
AAT wharfs in Brisbane and Port Kembla have just announced a new procedure that will take effect on the 9th August for all used mobile machinery and vehicles. The new procedure will require the shipper to provide the following documentation with the machine or vehicle when delivered to the wharf for export.
1. Certificate that the machine is mechanically sound and in full working order. Please click for the Certification of Used Machinery Document.
2. Either the Operators manual on how to start and drive the machine or a diagram identifying the usage of all controls and switches including the start and emergency shutdown device, if applicable.
Once the machine has been received and checked in at the R&D office the staff will complete the export sticker and a rear vision mirror tag that will identify any existing faults of the machine and the transport driver will affix both to the machine. If the machine is not operational at the time of export, alternate measures will have to be taken to export the machine. This may include shipping the machine on a mafi trailer.
