AQIS name change to DAFF Biosecurity
31 Jan 2012

The Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) is changing their name to DAFF Biosecurity as they believe it to be a better representation of their brief.

Their announcement is as follows:

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has recently launched its new Strategic Statement and departmental identity. As you may be aware these changes affect the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS).

The changes reflect where the government is headed in preparing new biosecurity legislation which is developed with the contemporary trading environment in mind. As a result, we will see the AQIS title superseded in favour of our focus on biosecurity, to be displayed asDAFF Biosecurity.

Our new DAFF identity better captures the biosecurity continuum—that is, comprehensively addressing pest and disease risks off shore (before they reach Australia), at our border and on shore (within Australia)—rather than focusing our activities on quarantine at the border.
Biosecurity risks are growing for a number of reasons, such as: increasing imports from higher risk destinations; population spread into new areas; increasingly intensive agriculture; increased globalisation and climate change. Our new biosecurity system will ensure that we will have a responsive system to deal with current and future biosecurity risks.

For AQIS clients, the name change will not affect the authority under which audit, inspection and certification activities are conducted. Indeed, where our service is legislated, you may continue to see AQIS used for some time while we transition as a department.

The new departmental identity will be phased in over time as signs, uniforms and publications are updated. Shortly we will update our website which will make it easier for our stakeholders to access information and communicate with us.

These changes reinforce the level of service we provide, including our commitment to providing informed advice to government and industry, managing biosecurity risks, delivering programs and conducting research to help advance Australia’s agriculture, fisheries and forestry industries.

Skelton Sherborne Shipping Index December 2011

Machinery import volumes in December decreased by 28% to 2469 units. In comparison to previous years this is basically double the number for December 2009(1650) and up  401 units for December 2010(2068). This is a strong downward trend and the magnitude of these falls we have not seen since immediately prior to the GFC hitting Australia in March 2009

No Queues at Skelton Sherborne's 24/7 AQIS Washpad
30 Nov 2011

Through our AQIS washpad at Terminal 1 in Brisbane, which we have been operating 24/7 for quite some time now, on average our customers machines are released by AQIS in 24 to 48 hours from arrival in our terminal. This isn’t sales pitch. It’s a fact.

We have also re-commissioned our Terminal 2 washpad so our capacity is HUGE.

For a limited time, if you currently have any of your equipment in AQIS washing queues in the Port of Brisbane, then here is a deal you can’t afford to ignore.
  • FREE OF CHARGE Skelton Sherborne will immediately arrange to transfer your equipment back to our washpads.
  • Upon receipt of a copy of the quote you received from the other forwarder/contractor, we will beat any washing cost you have been quoted already by 10% and then bill you directly.
  • If we don’t have your machine through AQIS within 48 hours of it physically arriving in our terminal then we have failed so WE WON’T BILL YOU AT ALL.
Why wait and lose money on rental return, interest on the money tied up in the machine or down time when it could be out working?!

To take advantage of this offer, please contact our Terminal manager,
David McHenry.
Mobile: 0410 342 347

Please note:
* Your customs broker will need to arrange a re-direction with AQIS to Skelton Sherborne Terminal 1 or 2. This is a simple and quick process though.
* If required, crane hire, mechancial work, oxy cutting, AQIS facility fees are excluded. This offer applies to AQIS washing labour only.
* Transport back to Skelton Sherborne is to be performed by our 4 x 8 float.
* Skelton Sherborne’s standard trading terms and conditions apply.

By the way, while this offer applies to Brisbane, if you have cargo destined for FREMANTLE where currently AQIS washing delays are at least 6 weeks, think about getting your cargo discharged in Brisbane. Cost effectively, we can probably have it in Perth, cleared and ready to go before Christmas!
